Antacids
"Alimentz® will not neutralize your stomach acid, thus Alimentz® allows for your stomach acid to continue digesting food. The stomach acid stays where it belongs, so it can do its work of beginning the digestion process. The gel barrier may last for more than an hour (generally much longer lasting than antacids), and is eventually passed to the intestines and eliminated."
Drugs in this Class
Antacids often contain aluminum- or magnesium-containing:
Aluminum Hydroxide (AlternaGEL, Alu-Cap, Alu-Tab, Amphojel, Dialume)
Aluminum Hydroxide Oral Liquid (AlternaGEL Liquid, Amphojel Suspension)
Aluminum and Magnesium Hydroxide (Alamag, Aludrox, Di-Gel, Maalox, Magnalox, Mylanta®
Aluminum salt may cause constipation, and magnesium salt can lead to diarrhea.
Antacids are often the first drugs recommended to relieve acid reflux, and heartburn symptoms, such as Maalox, Alka-Seltzer, Tums®, Rolaids®, and Mylanta®. Many brands on the market use different combinations of three basic salts—magnesium, calcium, and aluminum—with hydroxide or bicarbonate ions to neutralize the acid in your stomach.
